Ovide Yencesse, was a French medallist (1869-1947)who, after his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, was employed in the studios of the medallists Ponscarme and Levillain. He was a much admired medallist who developed a style reminiscent of the painter Eugene Carrière and became known as the 'Carrièrre of the medal' with soft-focus images on his medals. In 1900 he received the Gold Medal award for works exhibited at the Exposition Universelle. In 1918 he became director of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Dijon, the place of his birth. Later in life he made a study of impressionism and paid much attention to the patina of his work. He was very interested in the new art of photography, many of his subjects on medals were taken from photographs.
